Ecology and genetic resources in perennial grasses and forage legumes of grasslands

The goal:: To create an active collection of native and foreign germplasm (ecotypes, local populations, varieties, etc.), based on the natural genetic variability necessary to create new biological forms of grasses and perennial legumes of grassland, with characteristics corresponding to the breeding objectives.

Specific objective:

  • Higher utilization of the genetic resources of perennial grasses and legumes of Romania, which currently has a very rich native genetic base, consisting of varieties and populations of plants, resistant to diseases and pests, adapted to the climatic conditions of our country.
  • Harvesting and conservation of genetic resources of perennial grasses and forage legumes for a medium term: the foundation of a functional germplasm collection comprising ecotypes, local populations, varieties, etc.
  • Elaboration of technologies for ecological restoration of pastures with degraded grass carpet, for re-grassing of anthropically degraded lands: antierozial greensward, ash coverings, ski slopes;

-   Biological consolidation and landscaping restoration of surfaces involved in land improvement works by re-grassing method.
