Connecting our livestock farms to EU performance and quality standards cannot be done without a solid animal feeding base in which permanent and temporary grasslands play a vital role. In addition, apart from the crucial role of providing animal feed, grasslands have an important role in rural and environmental development reflected by: sequestration of carbon in soils, symbiotic nitrogen fixation, landscape quality, biodiversity conservation, soil fertility improvement and flood and landslide prevention, important cultural heritage and water reserves management.

In order to improve and utilize the grassland, our institute creates new varieties of perennial grasses and forage legumes that are more productive and qualitative, produce seeds from higher biological categories, to be promoted, develop new improvement technologies suitable to the stationary area  conditions and degrees of intensification, improve the machine system for mechanization of grassland farming, elaborates methods of rational use, disseminates the research results by different ways.

To achieve these targets, the institute has as main directions: determining the environmental factors that influence the area and productivity of the grasslands; establishing the main types of grasslands and characterizing them; ecological reconstruction of grasslands with degraded sward;  restoring by re-grassing the anthropically degraded lands; biological consolidation and landscaping restoration of surfaces involvedi n land improvement works by re-grassing method; harvesting and conservation of genetic resources of perennial grasses and forage legumes for a medium term; characterization and evaluation of grassland genetic resources; the seed production of perennial grass and  forage legumes from the higher biological categories; increasing the degree of mechanization of  grassland farming by modernizing the existing machines and making new machines; increasing the reliability of specific agricultural machinery and equipment for grassland; improving the technologies of mechanization of the specific works on the pastures; the use of unconventional energies on grasslands ; reducing the degree of pollution of the environment.
